On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion upon Ukraine, marking the largest conventional military attack on a sovereign state in Europe since World War II. The cargo container industry had already been rocked by the global pandemic; standard shipping containers and other cargo containers faced skyrocketing prices due to the global shortage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It appears that there was no time for the market to make a recovery as already, the two week Russia-Ukraine conflict has begun creating bottlenecks in transport of goods and commodities, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/11\/business\/russia-ukraine-shipping-cargo.html\"><span class=\"s2\">many transport companies and industry analysts believing that the war and uncertainty with sanctions has caused backups of ships at some points and delay in shipments<\/span><\/a>, especially around Europe. The most visible damage is seen in the Black Sea where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ukraine-war-ships-stranded-sailors-global-supply-chain-11646754357\"><span class=\"s2\">more than 100 ships and their crews have been stranded at Ukrainian ports<\/span><\/a>, missiles have hit several commercial vessels, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60606515\"><span class=\"s2\">an explosion on or near an Estonian dry cargo vessel sank it<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As such, it is evident that the Russia-Ukraine crisis is already having a toil on the global supply chain, with Glenn Koepke, the general manager of network collaboration at the consultancy FourKites, predicting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/russia-war-ukraine-could-triple-ocean-shipping-rates-experts-2022-3\"><span class=\"s2\">shipping rates could surge from $10,000 per 40-ft container to $30,000<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<b>Impact of Sanctions<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The world\u2019s three biggest container lines have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/worlds-biggest-container-lines-suspend-shipping-russia-2022-03-01\/\"><span class=\"s2\">temporarily suspended cargo shipments to and from Russia<\/span><\/a> in response to Western sanctions. Swiss-headquartered MSC, the world\u2019s biggest container shipping company by capacity, said in a customer advisory that as of 1 March 2022, it had introduced \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msc.com\/ben\/notices\/2022-march\/msc-temporarily-halts-bookings-to-from-russia\"><span class=\"s2\">a temporary stoppage<\/span><\/a> on all cargo bookings to\/from Russia, covering all access areas including Baltics, Black Sea and Far East Russia\u201d. The move follows similar decisions taken by other major shipping company players.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\t<div class=\"img has-hover x md-x lg-x y md-y lg-y\" id=\"image_1307810134\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"img-inner image-cover dark\" style=\"padding-top:75%;\">\r\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.osgcontainers.com\/en-sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Russia-Ukraine-Blog1.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.osgcontainers.com\/en-sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Russia-Ukraine-Blog1.png 680w, https:\/\/www.osgcontainers.com\/en-sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Russia-Ukraine-Blog1-510x338.png 510w, https:\/\/www.osgcontainers.com\/en-sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/Russia-Ukraine-Blog1-604x400.png 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<style scope=\"scope\">\n\n#image_1307810134 {\n  width: 100%;\n}\n<\/style>\n\t<\/div>\r\n\t\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The conflict has resulted in many vessels needing to reroute, exacerbating congestion at other ports in Europe even as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/ukraines-ports-stay-closed-until-russian-invasion-ends-maritime-administration-2022-02-28\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Ukraine\u2019s largest port shut down<\/span><\/a>. Over <a href=\"https:\/\/lloydslist.maritimeintelligence.informa.com\/LL1140104\/Russian-vessels-transit-Kerch-Strait-for-first-time-since-Ukraine-invasion\"><span class=\"s2\">200 ships are waiting to cross the Kerch Strait<\/span><\/a>. With the global container industry still reeling from the wake of the pandemic, the multiple systemic disruptions and shutdowns unfortunately will continue to sustain and perhaps even escalate the increases in shipping and cargo container costs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Collateral Damage<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">That is not all. Critical infrastructures are often collateral damage in wars between nations. For instance, in 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.i-cio.com\/management\/insight\/item\/maersk-springing-back-from-a-catastrophic-cyber-attack\"><span class=\"s3\">Maersk was hit by a major cyberattack<\/span><\/a> and this resulted in them being completely off-the-grid for a few weeks. Maersk was labelled as \u2018purely collateral damage\u2019 in a cyberattack targeting Ukraine, an attack that Western intelligence have blamed on Russia.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This situation could occur in 2022,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>but with potentially more serious global ramifications. With sanctions, Lars Jensen, CEO of consultancy Vespucci Maritime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/shipping-braces-for-impact-as-ukraine-crisis-intensifies\"><span class=\"s2\">notes<\/span><\/a> that Russia is likely to respond with cyberattacks that will echo the attacks of 2017, targeting critical infrastructure such as shipping lines, ports and terminals. While in 2017, losing a major container supplier would have minimal impact, in 2022, that situation would be vastly different when set against the backdrop of the global cargo container shortage, where there is limited buffer capacity.
